What Happens When You Don’t Eat After a Workout

Many nutritionists and fitness experts recommend eating within 30 minutes after your workout. That is the process of refueling your body after its energy is drained from the training. What you need now is a full protein and carbs packed meal that will give you energy and repair the ‘damage’ on your muscles caused by the training.

Our lives are full of different periods and times, which reflects on our fitness routine. Many times, we are busy with work, meetings, class, or whatever, that working out more than 30-40 minutes is impossible. We finish the workout and rush out to the next obligations. This is time consuming, and a lot of the times can make us skip our post-workout meal. Missing the protein bar or pre-cooked snack can be a nightmare now. Skipping a post-workout meal can sabotage your fitness goals.

Ignoring post-workout routines, like post-workout meal, can cause many serious injuries. Many fitness experts and nutritionists agree that, skipping the post-workout meal can lead to a bad injury. Refueling our body is essential, especially if you do heavy workouts, for escaping serious harm to our body. Feeding your muscles with quality food is how they grow.

But, serious injuries are not the only thing you should be worried if you plan on skipping the post-workout meal. When we exercise, our bodies are wasting salt, potassium, calcium, etc. which can be restored by consuming healthy food right after our training is over. If you plan to do cardio, or workout outside- while the sun is burning- consider eating post-workout meal. Skipping the post-workout meal after a super sweaty training can be both damaging and devastating.  Dehydration and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) can both set in quickly and make you feel disoriented or even pass out. In rare cases, lack of electrolytes can throw off the electrical impulses that keep the heart beating properly, leading to cardiac arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat.

Working out and exercising should be a source of fun and variety. Developing healthy habits is essential if you want success in the fitness field. The best way to keep a safe journey is by constantly refueling your body after a workout and trying to stay away from dehydration.

Two helpful tips to keep you on the right track:

1. Never step a foot in the gym without a bottle full of water. Drinking water is the best way to stay hydrated during and after your workout. The one thing you do not want to skip is rehydrating your body all the time. Try to remember this tip.
2. Pack a small and healthy snack every day you plan on working out. This is just a safety matter. When you know you have even a small and nutritious snack in your backpack everything is different.
